A group of particles which move, on average, in a common direction.
In an electron microscope particles are originally emitted by a particle source and intended to interact with a sample or a detector. The definition here should be differentiated from particles moving due to electrochemical gradient (i.e. in diffusion of liquids). Due to the wave-particle duality, a beam can also be considered as a series of waves propagating in a common direction.
